To aid the sale of Dell’s new smartphone, the Streak, the computer giant has enlisted the help of the Voluntary Butler Scheme and their 2009 song ‘Multiplayer.’
In the commercial, VBS’ lyric “Love is a game, a game for two/Love is a game I want to play with you” tells the story of a dapper gentleman with tulips trying to meet a woman with whom he has a date. In the process, people around town — with Dell Streaks in hand — demonstrate the various functions and capabilities of this new “hand tablet.” Dell takes a cue from Apple by using a simple song with a catchy melody to associate feelings of simplicity, utility and fun with its product.
Before going any further, it should be noted that Voluntary Butler Scheme is the alias of Rob Jones, a Birmingham, England native. Jones is a one man band and has been making his own brand of indie-pop music since his 2008 discovery on MySpace.
“It’s pretty exciting,” Jones tells Spinner of the Dell spot. “The ad looks great. And it means now when I meet new people and they ask me what I do, I can say I do a bit of music, I sell a few phones …”
Jones can also add selling the dramatized exploits of attractive doctors to his résumé: His song ‘Trading Things In’ was used during an episode of ‘Grey’s Anatomy.’ Both ‘Trading Things In’ and ‘Multiplayer’ can be found on VBS’ debut album, ‘At Breakfast, Dinner, Tea.’
